Welcome to the Jim Willis website!!

I have a few new pieces for you to look at, and some not quite finished ones to come so keep checking back.  The buffalo pictured below is featured in the Fall 2016 issue of Woodcarving Illustrated.  There is an article on how to carve and paint it.

The slide show below gives different views of two new seminar pieces, the Tiger cub and the Buffalo calf.
Slide ShowI usually carve adult animals but I felt that I needed to branch out so this is what I came up with.  Tigers are such beautiful animals and they are quickly vanishing from their environments so I decided to carve a Tiger cub.  Because she is so deep in the grass, I decidedto do it in two pieces.  The habittat can be changed to whatever setting you wish.  This piece is carved from jelutong and painted with acrylic washes then sealed with satin lacquer.  Look for the roughout on my Roughout page.

I love buffalo which made carving this young critter so much fun. I carved a similar piece many years ago with her mama. It brings back memories of watching the calves and their mamas in a nearby park. Needless to say, I had to keepmy distance otherwise mama would charge the fence. This piece is also carved from jelutong and finished with acrylic washes and satin lacquer.

Jelutong is a ropical wood which has a mahogany type grain pattern with a cream coloration. It carves easily with hand tools and power carves even better. I happen ed to come across some, but it is not readly available. Fish and decoy carvers were the ones to use it most extensively.
